For decades Durban has been known as Surf City. With beautiful weather, warm water and great waves peeling off the piers that make up the Golden Mile, it is obvious why Durban is such an attraction on Africa’s coastline.
The climate is conducive to surfing year-round and it must be one of the most consistent wave-magnets in the world. Half an hour north and south of Durban one can find numerous uncrowded high quality waves which are generally at their prime during the months of April and May.

Over time the Surf City ethos has permeated the very essence of Durban, spreading beyond the golden beaches into every aspect of the city. From the Wave House in Gateway, where anyone can pull into a perfect tube at any time of the day, to the surfer friendly clubs and restaurants like Taco Zulu (Florida Road), Joe Cools (North Beach), Box Bar (Umhlanga Rocks), and the Beach Café (Bay of Plenty), there are few places in Durban that a surfer cannot walk into and feel immediately at home.

UShaka Marine World (South Beach) offers a glimpse at the myriad of creatures that surfers share the oceans with, while a visit to the Sharks Board in Umhlanga will give an interesting insight into how surfers and bathers alike are protected everyday from the ocean’s greatest predators.

For a more cultural experience there is PheZulu Village in Bothas Hill, while a visit to Moyo Restaurant in Ushaka Land (South Beach) will offer the opportunity to sample dozens of local and African dishes.

To any visiting surfer, Durban truly is Africa’s Playground.
